Why a morning routine is key

You may have read a fair bit about morning routines and why they are so good.  I am a big fan of starting the day with whatever routine/ ritual you like.  There are many different ways to start your morning and I believe if you pick something each day you like and stick to it, you will set yourself up for a wonderful productive day.  When I jump into bed of an evening, I think about + visualise how I am going to start my day + I get super excited!  Here are some examples of what you could do.  Know that you will need a good nights rest and set your alarm a little earlier.  Once this habit is formed, trust me, you will be looking forward to it too!

  1. A morning walk or run
  2. An early gym session
  3. A 10 minute morning yoga/ stretching sequence
  4. Meditation/ mindfulness practice
  5. A glass of warm water or a healthy juice
  6. Writing down your to do list for the day (might be a combo of mindfulness, gratitude, work-related goals, exercise, food, family/ friends/ meal planning)
  7. Tuning into your favourite podcast
  8. Making a note of what you are grateful for

Ok so you will commit to getting up earlier (note: whether you get up at 530 or 550am, it really isnt that much of a difference!) but what it is in for me?  Whether you are a successful business professional or a super mum, the benefits are abundant:

  1. stress reduction
  2. improved time management skills
  3. increased productivity both before, during and after work
  4. weight loss - you will have time to prep healthy food for the day plus if you are moving more....
  5. feeling happy - waking up without the daily rush will reduce stress hormones
  6. time for you, and you only - enough said
  7. will allow you to control your schedule rather than your schedule controlling you
  8. you will be less likely to forget anything
  9. clarity and focus will be increased for the day ahead

Here is what I do to start my day:

I usually wake around 530am and do a 5 minute meditation session in bed; this might be a body scan, some slow breathing and setting my intentions for the day ahead.  Then I will head to the kitchen where I have my lemon/ apple cider vinegar water with a few morning vitamins and brew an organic coffee.  If I have time I love to do 5-10minutes of light yoga stretches. Then I will sit down with my coffee and go over my to-do list for the day and have time to prep a healthy breakfast for the kids and I.  This is my time and providing the family + dog are not awake - I cherish every minute.  There is certainly something to be said for having some quiet time on your own to set you up for the day ahead.

Sounds amazing right!  Some key tips to making it stick:

  • try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day/ night
  • get 7-8 hours sleep
  • have some water on waking to rehydrate
  • sunshine is a good way to close off melatonin (the sleep hormone)
  • keep it simple: maybe some stretches are all that you can  do, then great!

Find whatever works for you; not all morning routines are created equal! But how great it is to have accomplished something before your day has even started?!
